We kindly invite you to the presentation of the book
Laibach Kunst – Foundations
at the Institute for Contemporary Art, Trg kralja Tomislava 20, Zagreb
on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at 6:00 p. m.
The book of essays, which provides the most complete historical analysis and professional evaluation of Laibach’s artistic and media activity to date, will be presented by editors Barbara Borčić, art critic and curator, Ivo Saliger (alias Ivan Novak), founding member of Laibach and Leonida Kovač, art historian and theoretician, curator, and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts of the University of Zagreb, author of one of the texts in the book.
The book focuses on the artistic practice of Laibach Kunst, its significance and reception during Laibach’s intense activity within the Ljubljana and Yugoslav alternative scene in the first half of the 1980s. This monography brings together pictorial and documentary material plus expert texts on the artistic practice of Laibach Kunst during the formative period in the first half of ’80’s, when their early exhibitions established the method of retroavantgarde, the artistic processes of appropriation and montage, and the introduction of a distinctive motif world and system of symbols that has stimulated intense associations and a multitude of diverse interpretations.
Six essays (Barbara Borčić, Lilijana Stepančič, Eda Čufer, Dragan Živadinov, Leonida Kovač in Slavko Timotijević) analyse and interpret Laibach’s artistic and media activities, their images, methods and processes, and reflect on the first exhibitions in the three urban centres of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia – Belgrade, Ljubljana and Zagreb.
